The Indian car market has been moving in the same direction for years. Big stance, high ground clearance and SUV badges everywhere. Today almost every new car wants to look like an SUV. hatchbacks have turned into crossovers, compact cars are being called “micro SUVs”, and SUVs are slowly becoming the default answer to most car buying queries in India. However, 2025 took an unexpected turn.India’s best-selling car last year was not an SUV. The country’s most popular luxury car was also not one. Instead, the two sedans quietly topped the charts in their respective segments. The Maruti Suzuki Dezire became India’s best-selling passenger vehicle, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB took top honors as the best-selling luxury car.
The sedan that defeated India’s biggest SUV
At a time when SUVs account for over 55 per cent of India’s passenger vehicle market, the success of these two sedans says something important. Market promotion and actual buyer behavior are not always the same.
Maruti Suzuki Dezire ended calendar year 2025 with sales of over 2.14 lakh units. It was easily ahead of some of the biggest SUV names in the country including Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon. Interestingly, the last time a sedan topped India’s annual sales charts was in 2019 and even then, it was the Dzire. This feat becomes even greater when you consider how aggressively the market has shifted towards SUVs in recent years. Car manufacturers are launching SUVs in every budget and size category. But despite all this, the Dezire continued to sell in huge numbers month after month. The sedan crossed 15,000 units in January 2025 and maintained the pace throughout the year. Sales reached around 17,000 units in April and crossed 18,000 units in May. During the festive season, the numbers went above the 20,000 mark. 20,791 units were recorded in October, while in November it reached 21,082 units. December also remained strong with sales of over 19,000 units.
Why does the Dezire still resonate with Indian buyers?
The reason is quite simple. The basics remain right in the Dezire. Fuel efficiency still matters in a big way in India. So do maintenance costs and reliability. Dezire’s low operating costs, extensive service network and stress-free driving capability attract buyers in cities and small towns alike. The increasing popularity of CNG variants has also played a major role here.
Yes, fleet demand is also a major factor. The Dezire remains one of the most preferred cars for taxi operators and app-based mobility services, but it would be unfair to limit its success to fleet sales only. The latest generation model has also brought in more private buyers with updated styling, new features and a stronger focus on safety. Buyers today may praise SUVs, but many still choose cars that are economical and easy to handle for everyday life.
How the E-Class LWB became a favorite of luxury buyers
Interestingly, a similar trend can be seen at the other end of the market. In India’s luxury segment, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB became the best-selling luxury car in FY2026. This happened despite luxury SUVs dominating conversations and social media. The reason for this once again depends on the choice of the Indian buyer.
India remains a driver-driven luxury market. For many buyers in this segment, rear seat comfort matters more than aggressive styling or off-road capability. The E-Class Long Wheelbase offers exactly what this group of customers wants. It offers the same generous rear-seat space as the Mini-S-Class at a relatively lower price.
Additionally, the sedan continues to offer some benefits from behind the wheel as well. Compared to SUVs, sedans generally have a lower center of gravity. This improves stability at high speeds and gives drivers more confidence when cornering. While SUVs offer great visibility and road presence, many driving lovers still prefer the balanced driving experience of sedans.
Sedans aren’t mainstream anymore, but they’re far from dead
For all the attention SUVs are getting today, the 2025 proves that there’s still something special about a well-sorted sedan. The Dezire delivered efficiency and everyday ease. The E-Class LWB offers comfort and a proper driving experience. Two completely different cars, two completely different buyers, but same result. Even when the package feels right, Indian customers are happy to choose a sedan over the SUV crowd.
