Ultraviolette Automotive recently finished its best quarter ever. Between April and June this year, the Bengaluru-based electric motorcycle maker sold more than 1,500 vehicles, up from around 300 in the same quarter last year. This is an increase of more than 400 percent.Company co-founders, CEO Narayan Subramaniam and CTO Neeraj Rajmohan spoke to TOI Auto about the quarter and where the company is headed. Ultraviolette claims to have overtaken the mid-size sales of a rival premium motorcycle brand in India, and is competing with the mid-size range of another, despite operating a fraction of its dealer network. “Ultraviolet has 40 stores today. Even with that distribution, we have overtaken (that rival’s) sales,” Rajmohan said. On the other opponent, the claims were more measured. “We are in a similar position with (their) sale,” Subramaniam said. He said the company sold about 650 vehicles from those 40 stores in June alone. It should be noted that these figures are UltraViolet’s own readings of the market. The company’s X47 crossover motorcycle is at the center of this growth. Rajmohan said it was deliberate to price the In Ultraviolette’s own lineup, the X47 makes up about 85 percent of sales, while the F77 makes up the remainder. Development is not limited to big cities. Subramaniam said bookings were evenly divided between tier 1 and tier 2 cities, a trend he linked to the earlier rise of electric scooters generating wider awareness. “As soon as a scooter segment is established, people start moving towards the somewhat more performance-oriented motorcycle segment,” he said. He also pointed to the company’s battery warranty, which can be extended up to eight years or eight lakh kilometres, as a factor in winning over buyers outside metros.Speaking on Delhi’s EV Policy 2.0, which has been approved by the Delhi Cabinet and is effective from July 1, 2026. It will stop registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers in the capital from April 1, 2028, although vehicles already on the road are unaffected. Subramaniam described this policy as an opportunity and said that Ultraviolette was never planning to remain only a premium motorcycle manufacturer. Two more products, the Tesseract and the Shockwave, are coming at more accessible price points. Aiming to sell four to five lakh vehicles per year by 2030, he said, “Our view has always been that the mass scale will not be electric scooters or motorcycles, it will be both.”When asked about the entry of established players in the electric motorcycle segment, Subramaniam welcomed the competition. “This is a sign that this segment will now start growing rapidly,” he said. Rajmohan compared this to how electric scooter penetration increased from 1 percent to close to 15 percent after serious manufacturers entered that market. The founders also described widespread buyer confusion over the government’s ethanol blending incentives. Rajmohan said this uncertainty, paradoxically, is in favor of EVs, because electric offers “on the one hand, that is a very, very straightforward and easy purchase.”
