India’s electric vehicle market has evolved mostly around practical options. Although we’ve seen more capable cars come to market in recent years, small town cars and SUVs still dominate the EV sector. This is because buyers in this segment focus on range, running costs and everyday usability. But the arrival of the MG Cyberster introduced a different idea. It is an electric sportscar that promises driving excitement and its design comes from the above mentioned price bracket segment. But can a niche electric sports car find buyers in India? Is India ready for electric sports cars?
Cyberstar entered the Indian market in July 2025 with a starting price of around Rs 72.49 lakh, ex-showroom. Deliveries began soon thereafter through MG’s premium MG Select retail network. Unlike most electric cars on sale in India, the Cyberster is a two-door convertible roadster.
It looks very different from the common EV. The car features a soft top convertible roof and dramatic scissor doors. It is also the fastest MG in the world. Despite being a niche product, Cyberster has shown encouraging early numbers. The model crossed the 500-unit mark within the first six months after launch. MG says that more than 580 units were sold during this period. These figures are small compared to mass-market electric vehicles, but they are remarkable for a two-seat electric sports car priced at more than Rs 70 lakh. Statistics show that some premium buyers in India are open to electric performance cars.MG has also tried to maintain interest through updates. Recently a new Iris Cyan exterior color has been introduced. Cyberster’s response shows that India’s EV market is gradually expanding beyond basic transportation. Most buyers still prefer practical and affordable electric cars. This trend is unlikely to change any time soon. But clearly there is a small group of customers who want to explore something more exciting.The car has attracted the interest of celebrities, entrepreneurs and high net worth individuals. Owners include celebrities like Avdhoot Gupte, Aryaman Sheth, Pooja Dadlani and Shefali Verma.Cyberster is not expected to become a high-volume product. That said, electric sports cars may not be common in India yet, but they’re no longer unrealistic.
