India’s passenger vehicle market made a strong start to FY2026 with many carmakers reporting good year-on-year growth in April. Strong SUV demand, improving rural sentiment and rising interest in EVs played a key role, while brands like Hyundai and Kia recorded their best ever performance in April. Here’s how the key players fared.

Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the market by recording its highest ever monthly sales. The company shipped 2,39,646 units in April 2026, with domestic sales alone touching a record 1,91,122 units. Passenger vehicle sales stood at 1,87,704 units, while exports increased to 40,054 units. The growth was driven by strong demand across all segments, especially SUVs, which sold over 55,000 units, along with a steady performance from compact cars.Hyundai Motor India also delivered a strong performance, registering its highest-ever domestic sales in April at 51,902 units, up 17% year-on-year. The brand also exported 13,708 units during the month. Notably, the Venue achieved its best ever monthly domestic sales of 12,420 units, helping Hyundai maintain its growth momentum.
Tata Motors recorded total passenger vehicle sales of 59,701 units, including 59,000 units in the domestic market, a growth of 30.5%. A major highlight was the EV segment, where sales grew 72.1% to 9,150 units.Mahindra & Mahindra recorded strong SUV demand, selling 56,331 units in the domestic market, showing a growth of 8%. Overall auto volumes stood at 94,627 units, up 14% year-on-year.Total sales of Toyota Kirloskar Motor stood at 32,086 units, which is 17% higher than last year. Domestic sales stood at 30,159 units, registering a solid growth of 21%, although exports declined during the month.Kia India recorded its highest ever sales since entering the Indian market in April with 27,286 units, up 16% year-on-year. Models like Seltos, Sonet and Carensa continued to drive volumes for the brand.JSW MG Motor India recorded a marginal growth of 3% at 6,018 units in April despite global supply chain challenges linked to geopolitical tensions.Renault India saw the fastest growth, with domestic sales doubling to 5,413 units, a growth of 108%. The brand said new generation models and network expansion played a key role in this surge.Nissan Motor India, on the other hand, registered a growth of 75% to total sales of 5,388 units, including 3,203 units domestically.
