Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recently took a closer look at Mahindra’s new tactical ATV based on the Mahindra Thar Rocks platform during the Defense Triveni Sangam event in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The rugged off-road machine attracted attention at the defense technology showcase, which was jointly organized by the Northern and Central Commands of the Indian Army as well as the Society of Indian Defense Manufacturers. The Mahindra ATV had already created a buzz after Anand Mahindra first shared pictures of the vehicle on social media, and now it appears to be one of the latest additions to Mahindra’s growing defense mobility portfolio.Based on the visuals shared by Anand Mahindra, the ATV looks like a heavily modified version of the Thar Rocks, specifically designed for tactical and military applications. The regular body panels of the SUV have been largely replaced by a stripped-back structure focused on functionality and durability. It gets a full tubular roll cage covering the cabin and rear section, while the doors and roof have been completely removed to reduce weight and improve accessibility in combat situations. The vehicle runs on heavy-duty off-road tires wrapped around steel wheels, and the high stance suggests suspension modifications for use over rough terrain. At the front, it has a heavy-duty bumper equipped with a winch, recovery hook, and additional mounting points. The bonnet also appears to have several utility mounts for carrying tools.
The rear has been extensively reworked and now features an open skeleton frame with modular storage areas. It also has a jerry can mount on the rear door and provisions for carrying additional equipment and supplies. Other visible elements include side step guards, exposed hinges and tow hooks.Inside, the cabin features basic seating and almost no luxury features seen in the standard Thar Rocks. The ATV is designed to be airdrop-ready, indicating potential air deployment capabilities for military operations.Mahindra has not yet officially revealed the technical specifications of the vehicle. However, it may use the same powertrain options available with the Thar Rocks. These include a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 172 hp and 370 Nm torque, as well as a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 174 hp and 380 Nm torque. The defence-spec version is expected to feature a four-wheel-drive setup and may receive different tuning depending on operational requirements.
