India’s passenger vehicle market saw strong momentum in May 2026, with many carmakers reporting good year-on-year growth. Leading the group was Maruti Suzuki, which recorded its highest-ever monthly sales, while companies like Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia and Toyota also recorded positive growth during the month.
Car sales May 2026: How did the brands perform?
Maruti Suzuki India recorded total sales of 2,42,688 units in May 2026, the company’s best ever monthly performance. Total sales increased by about 34.8 percent compared to 1,80,077 units sold in May 2025.The company’s domestic sales also reached a new all-time high of 1,93,535 units, registering a growth of nearly 39 per cent year-on-year as compared to 1,38,690 units sold during the same month last year. Exports contributed 41,914 units, while sales to other OEMs stood at 7,239 units.Tata Motors also recorded strong growth in the passenger vehicle segment. The company sold 59,090 passenger vehicles in the domestic market in May 2026, up 42 percent from 41,557 units in May 2025. Total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, reached 59,790 units, up 42 percent from 42,040 units sold a year ago.Electric vehicles continued to play a major role in the growth story of Tata Motors. Combined domestic and export EV sales surged 85 per cent year-on-year to a record 10,517 units as against 5,685 units in May 2025. Hyundai Motor India reported domestic sales of 47,837 units in May 2026, registering a growth of 9.1 percent year-on-year. With exports of 13,300 units, the company’s total monthly sales stood at 61,137 units, showing an overall growth of 4.1 per cent over the same month last year.Mahindra & Mahindra continues its strong performance in the SUV segment. The automaker sold 58,021 units in the domestic market in May 2026, registering a growth of 11 percent compared to the year-ago period.Kia India achieved its highest ever sales in May since entering the Indian market. The company recorded wholesale sales of 27,586 units during the month, up 23.6 percent from 22,315 units sold in May 2025. Toyota Kirloskar Motor also ended the month on a positive note. The company sold 33,128 units in May 2026, up 7 percent from 30,864 units sold in the same period last year. This includes 30,574 units sold in the domestic market and 2,554 units exported.
