Kia India recently launched the new second generation Kia Seltos in the Indian market, which brings major updates in terms of design, features and underpinnings. However, despite the SUV being relatively freshly launched, the model has once again been spotted undergoing road testing, hinting at the possibility of a new powertrain option under development. The latest generation Seltos introduced a completely redesigned exterior along with a more premium cabin layout packed with new-age technology and comfort features. The SUV is also based on Kia’s new K3 platform, which is expected to support electrified powertrain options in the future.
Now, with new test models spotted soon after the launch of the updated model, speculations about a hybrid version of the Seltos have started gaining momentum. While Kia has not confirmed anything officially yet, the testing activity suggests that the company may be evaluating a hybrid setup for the SUV. A hybrid-powered Seltos could help Kia improve fuel efficiency figures, and it would also allow the Seltos to better compete with rivals that are increasingly focusing on strong-hybrid technology.
Details about the hybrid powertrain are still under wraps. However, the Seltos is expected to use a self-charging strong-hybrid setup instead of a plug-in hybrid system. Recently, the Seltos Hybrid was showcased at the New York International Auto Show for the US market. The US-spec Kia Seltos Hybrid is equipped with a 1.6-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain with an all-wheel-drive setup. However, the India-spec version is expected to feature a smaller 1.5-litre hybrid unit with front-wheel drive.
The hybrid version of the Kia Seltos is expected to retain the same overall design as the standard model, with no major visual changes expected on the exterior. In terms of design, the front of the new Seltos clearly takes inspiration from Kia’s large global SUVs. Its grille now dominates the fascia with a bold, stepped pattern highlighted by vertical gunmetal inserts, which span almost the entire width of the nose. The square LED headlamps are placed at both corners, continuing the upright theme, while the DRLs create a vertical light signature that is further enhanced by the lightning-bolt-shaped LED element located on the outer edges. At the bottom, the bumper features contrasting black cladding and neatly integrated, rectangular surrounds for the fog lamps, adding to the strong looks of the SUV.On the sides, the shoulder line is more pronounced, the wheel arches are chunky and it gets newly designed 18-inch wheels. Traditional pull-type handles have been replaced with flush-fitted units. Kia has retained its signature pinch in the window line near the C-pillar, but this now flows into a blacked-out element that connects the rear quarter glass to the windscreen, giving the SUV a wraparound effect. At the rear, the number plate holder has been moved to the bumper for a cleaner tailgate, but the real attraction is the new inverted L-shaped LED light signature.Image: r/CarsIndia – Reddit
