It’s no secret that electric scooters are the fastest-growing part of the EV space, but it’s also a segment that’s becoming increasingly crowded. Everyone from legacy OEMs to startups are struggling at multiple price points. However, the formula appears to be the same. Big screen, impressive on-paper features and futuristic tricks. I recently spent a few days with the River Indy Gen 3, and I think this scooter felt like a departure from that template. This is basic. In a very pleasing manner. Let me explain how.
River Indie Gen 3: Design
This is a scooter that is clearly designed around everyday utility. Spend a few minutes around it, and the first thing that stands out is how different it looks. And it’s huge! As soon as I parked it in my office parking lot, people started noticing it. And it gets the same kind of attention on the road too. It has that boxy, rugged character that makes it different. Over time, you realize that it is designed based on practicality first, and then styled accordingly.
The front end is easily the highlight. It has a twin-pod headlamp setup that gives it a very robotic, almost sci-fi face. In fact, I remember seeing a robot with a similar face. Still, the scooter looks sharp, is instantly recognizable, and has a strong presence on the road. The LED lighting is clean and neatly integrated. River’s design team has managed to give it a modern look without any excess. And I think that’s a win for starters.
Move to the side, and the functional side of the design begins to show. It has thick body panels, protective side bars which give a sturdy feel. Tight parking spots, minor scratches: this feels like a scooter that can take it. The proportions are also interesting. The wide stance, helped by 14-inch wheels, gives it an imposing presence. On the back side things are kept clean and simple. The LED tail lamp looks very simple and sleek and goes well with the overall design. The most special thing is how it breaks the monotony. Most of the scooters in this area merge into each other after a limit. It is not. It has character.
River Indy Gen 3: Package
A very strong and intelligent mechanical setup has been used in this scooter. The Indy has a 4 kWh battery paired with a mid-mounted motor that produces around 6.7 kW and 26 Nm of torque. On paper, these are healthy numbers for the sector. The company claims an IDC range of 163 km on a fully juiced battery. You also get three riding modes: Eco, Ride and Rush. The important thing is that there is a noticeable difference in the behavior of each scooter. Eco mode controls this but increases the range. Rush Mode makes things exciting and playful. Talking about range, in real-world usage, I could get around 98km of range on a single charge: at best. 0-80% charging takes about five hours, which fits easily into a daily nighttime routine.The Indy River weighs in at 136kg (down from 142kg in Gen 2), which still tips the scale on the high side. Luckily, you don’t notice it much as you move along.
Talking about the features, it has a 6-inch LCD display, hill-hold assist, app connectivity, reverse mode and more. The screen is basic, clean, and has a good spread of information that’s easy to read on the go. Finally, practicality. The model, often referred to as the SUV of scooters, has ample storage space: 43 liters of underseat storage and a reliable front lockable glovebox. You also get a boot light, two bag hooks on the front, and a pannier mount on the sides. Our unit was also equipped with a phone mount. It comes as a charging accessory but looks premium and solid.
River Indy Gen 3: The riding experience
On the road, Indy feels like a mature offering. That’s a good thing but that doesn’t mean it can’t excite you. Once you switch to Rush Mode, things change dramatically. You can reach a top speed of 90 kmph but the acceleration slows down after 82 kmph. Otherwise, throttle response is smooth and predictable. Power delivery is linear. In daily traffic, especially at a standstill, it is very easy to drive. There is no sudden jump or jerky acceleration. It’s fast enough when you need it (provided you keep switching between modes). Another impressive thing is its 177 mm ground clearance which gives you the freedom and confidence to go through difficult terrains with ease.
As expected, range largely depends on usage. In my daily routine, mostly in ride mode with occasional bursts of rush, I was able to go around 85 to 90 km on a full charge. Eco mode can take this further, but at the expense of performance. For the daily commute, I found myself charging it once every two days, which felt manageable.
Ride quality leans towards the firmer side. It has telescopic forks at the front and twin shocks at the rear. On smooth roads, it feels stable and composed, and those 14-inch wheels add a lot of confidence. But on the broken patch, you feel bulges, especially at the back. However, not enough to spoil the deal. The ergonomics have also been sorted. The handlebar is within reach, you sit upright and the ride is comfortable enough for the daily commute.Handling is a pleasant surprise. It’s easy to filter through traffic, change direction quickly and even manage tight parking situations. Braking is handled by discs at both ends with a combined braking system. The rear brake feels smooth and easy to control, which gives confidence. However, the front brake feels a little loud at times. It responds quickly and has a sharp bite, which leads to some sudden jerks while riding.

After spending time with it, the River Indy 3rd Gen feels like a scooter that knows what it wants to be. It is priced at Rs 1.47 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi, which is higher. However, it backs this up with no-nonsense performance, everyday usability, solid hardware and excellent practicality. Yes, it misses a few features, especially when compared to rivals. But if you want a scooter that does its job well, is easy to live with and most importantly is reliable, then this makes a strong case for itself.
