A recent RTI response from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has revealed more details on how India NCAP conducts crash testing and safety ratings in India. The RTI was filed in March 2026. A post on TeamBHP reveals that it sought information about re-testing, crash test modifiers and how vehicles are selected for India NCAP assessment.According to feedback shared online, India NCAP had tested 35 car models till March 31, 2026. These were submitted voluntarily by all vehicle manufacturers. The reply also mentioned that none of the cars tested so far were directly selected by the Indian government, although AIS-197 rules allow the government to nominate vehicles for testing.

The RTI response also revealed that seven vehicles were re-tested or re-rated before their final ratings were published on the India NCAP website. These include Maruti Suzuki Dezire, Tata Punch ICE, Tata Sierra ICE, Tata Curve ICE, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Mahindra XUV400 EV and Mahindra BE6.
According to the RTI reply, these re-tests were conducted under clause 6.2 of AIS-197. The rule allows re-testing or re-evaluation if there is incomplete data, parameters are missing or if some results fall outside the required range. Re-testing is not unique to India NCAP. Similar safety programs around the world also conduct reassessments to ensure accurate results and verify improvements before final ratings are announced.Stay connected to TOI Auto for latest updates on the automotive sector and follow us on our social media handles on Facebook, Instagram and Xpress.
